Congratulations on the addition of the new furball called a kitten to your home. This is a crucial time to get your kitten started on the right path. Good veterinary care and appropriate vaccinations are important at this life stage to protect your new kitten and help them grow into a strong and healthy adult. Below is our protocol list for new kittens.

Core Needs

  • 1st vet visit: 9 weeks of age Comprehensive wellness exam, fecal test, deworming, 1st vaccine with an RCP, start kitten on appropriate heartworm prevention and flea control.
  • 2nd vet visit: 12 weeks of age 2nd Deworming, 2nd vaccine (booster) to RCP, perform lab test for Felv/FIV, send home 2nd dose of heartworm prevention / flea control
  • 3rd vet visit: 16 weeks of age 3 vaccine (booster) to RCP, Give 1st vaccine for Rabies, continue on heartworm prevention / flea control
  • 4th visit: 20-24 weeks of age Pre Operative / Wellness Blood Panel, Spay or Neuter (Surgery to be performed at CPAC), Microchip Implantation, and year prescription of heartworm prevention / flea control.

Non-Core Needs

If cats are going to be in door only, then we feel the above core treatments are adequate. If your cat will be spending time outdoors then there are other prevention needs to consider.

  • Feline Leukemia – Only started after neg blood test and consists of an initial vaccine followed by a booster in 3 to 4 weeks and then a booster once a year thereafter
  • Feline Aids – Only started after neg blood test and consists of initial vaccine followed by 2 boosters 3-4 weeks apart and then a booster once a year thereafter.
  • Microchip – We recommend breakaway collars for outdoor cats and thus microchips are the best way to have permanent ID for these cats
